http://www.kabansstorejpan.com/ | Autumn officially begins in a few weeks, and ?meteorological fall? began Sept. 1, but here on my back porch I can tell you that it?s very likely to begin sometime later today or tonight. There’s a change in the weather. The lenticular clouds, forming a patchy, ribbed ceiling at roughly 20,000 feet (estimating that by sighting my extended thumb with one eye), suggest cold air coming in at altitude. With seasonal change comes, as always, hope for renewal, recalibration, and reinvention. For example, I?m thinking of shocking the world and becoming someone who is known for the extent to which he is a knowledgable and enthusiastic consumer of beer. You scoff. You say: Dude, you’re a wine drinker. And I’m telling you that I’m full of surprises. Trust me, I’m a lot more enigmatic than you think, and that includes my beverage preferences. I know some would argue that vowing to drink more beer is an example of being excessively aspirational. You caution: Don?t set your goals too high, or you?ll be sorely disappointed. We all know how our major resolutions usually turn out. But remember the famous saying: A man?s reach cannot exceed his grasp, or maybe it?s that a man?s grasp cannot exceed his reach. Either way, it?s profound and unforgettable, and what I?m envisioning right now, hovering there at the very end of my reach and/or grasp, and then settling into the palm as neatly as a hot dog into a bun, is a brewski.Up until now, on this eve of my personal transformation, I?ve liked beer fine, and have been known to enjoy a malted refreshment like any other person. But I could never claim,???, honestly, to be a beer aficionado. I like microbrews, but I also like macrobrews. I haven’t even developed a fully formed position on the issue of bottles versus cans. Instinctively I think I like the cans, because it reminds me of my childhood, and the litter along the highways and stream beds. Discarded beer cans are the way we southerners tell the rest of the world that there are good times to be had, right here on this muddy river bank where the mullet are jumpin?. (?Gone fishin?” is, of course, a euphemism for ?Gone drinkin? a whole mess o? beer.?)When they invented the cans where the mountains turn blue if the beer is sufficiently cold, that got my attention. That made me think, ?We are blessed to live in this Age of Technology.?Growing up, I learned to drink beer at the end of a hard day of serious labor. We?d pull into the drive-through beverage mart in the 1964 Chevy pickup with the steel bed and buy us a 6-pack of Tuborg Gold. Unfortunately I often struggled to quaff the bitter beverage, seeing as how I was but a teenager and not fully mature, and retained a child?s revulsion of anything bitter. It took me years to learn to drink a beer like a man. Much of my life has been devoted to the training of my palate. When you get your palate to where you want it to be, you feel empowered, like you have leverage on lesser mortals. It’s important not to be smug about it, though. People can sense it when you’re doing that whole “palate superiority” thing.Looking up from my laptop, I see the clouds have shifted again, thickening, growing darker, the ceiling coming down. Maybe the big change-over isn?t coming as quickly as I thought. But I can be patient. I?m not going anywhere. That?s actually a nice feeling, too. Sure, change and reinvention and recalibration is great, but so is the opposite of all that. That?ll be a subject to address later ? the virtues of inflexibility, immutability and total congealment. |

il 06/09/2013 @ 12:48 | Here we go again: Another group that supports President Obama is suggesting that the oil industry somehow bought GOP frontrunner Mitt Romney to do its bidding. This all started late last week, when the Democratic National Committee responded to a $3.6 million ad campaign from the anti-Obama American Energy Alliance denouncing the president’s energy policies. Both and the earned three Pinocchios in previous columns for shaky and sometimes unfounded claims. Now the pro-Obama super PAC Priorities USA Action has taken a turn, with of its own with a video titled “Romney’s Big Oil Trail.” Let’s see whether this group’s ad holds up to scrutiny any better than the others we reviewed. The FactsThe message from the Priorities USA video boils down to this: Romney has deep ties to the oil industry, which is behind the anti-Obama ad, and “Big Oil” has pledged $200 million to the Republican candidate so he’ll support its tax breaks. We’ll examine those claims one by one. First, we should note that there is no consensus definition of “Big Oil.” A Google search of the term referred us first to the “supermajors,” a group of the top five or so integrated oil companies -- those that drill, refine and sell oil altogether. The billionaire Koch brothers, who are widely thought to be bankrolling the American Energy Alliance and whom Priorities USA claims to be largely responsible for the anti-Obama ad,???????, don’t own any of the integrated oil giants. Their empire, Koch Industries, consists of oil pipelines and refineries, as well as a host of big-name companies that have nothing to do with petroleum, such as Brawny paper towels, Stainmaster carpet, and Georgia-Pacific lumber. Forbes rated Koch Industries as the in the U.S. in 2010. It’s a large and wealthy conglomerate, but it’s hardly the biggest player in the oil business. More than supporting Romney, the Koch brothers have proven themselves to be determined to oust Obama. And it doesn’t take a political genius to realize from that criticizing the president over gas prices will hurt him more than just about anything else right now — whether it’s warranted or not. It’s quite possible that the brothers also have a bone to pick with the Obama administration over its decision to reject the proposed Keystone XL pipeline, although to testify on behalf of the project, for whatever reason. (Update: The next four paragraphs contain new information and revised analysis) Calling the Koch brothers “Big Oil” is a stretch. Beyond that, they seem to have no direct financial ties to the Romney campaign. William Koch is widely thought to be a bundler for the the Romney-supporting super PAC Restore Our Future, and he contributed a combined $1 million to the group both personally and through his Oxbow Carbon LLC. But the former governor has no control over how that super PAC spends its money.(CORRECTION: A previous version of this column said that David Koch had contributed $2,000 to the official Romney campaign, but that money came from a different David Koch than the one whose family founded Koch Industries.)In addition, the ad from the American Energy Alliance didn’t endorse or even mention Romney, so it’s a stretch for Priorities USA to drag him into its fight with the Koch brothers. How about Romney and the oil and gas industry in general? The GOP frontrunner has received $598,000 from that sector during this election cycle, representing less than 1 percent of his overall contributions. In contrast, Texas Gov. Rick Perry took in $834,000 from the industry before dropping out of the Republican nomination race earlier this year. (These totals comes from , the Web site of the Center for Responsive Politics.)Let’s take a look at a few of the supermajors. has contributed $28, 250 to Romney’s campaign compared to $13,014 for Obama. But has given $11,900 to the president’s campaign — he’s the company’s top recipient — compared to just $1,500 for the former Massachusetts governor. Romney may be the best bet for Republicans to replace Obama, but he’s hardly the darling of Big Oil, at least judging from the industry’s contributions to him. And the former governor’s status as the GOP frontrunner doesn’t prove a deep connection either. The only references we found to a $200 million pledge of any kind from the Koch brothers came from a that provided no attribution for the information, and a from the Obama campaign that accused the Kochs of “jacking up prices at the pump” and committing as much as $200 million to defeating Obama’s reelection. Even then, the money was supposed to go to conservative groups in general, not to Romney. (For all we know, this entire assumption may have come from the Obama campaign, |

http://www.tokeiwatchesja.com/ | Winning Our Future, a Super PAC supporting Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich, has released another attack on rival Mitt Romney’s business practices. A one-minute “trailer” and a 30-second TV ad (see below) that amplify the themes of corporate malfeasance accompany the nearly eight-minute video, “Blood Money.” (The title refers to the fact that a company once partly owned by Bain Capital, Romney’s firm, was found guilty of charging Medicare for unnecessary blood tests.)We were highly critical of Winning Our Future’s “King of Bain” film, , in part because it focused on business failures in which Romney was only tangentially involved. And anyone living in Massachusetts would find this Medicare fraud case to be old news because the case first emerged in 1992 as an issue in Romney’s successful race for governor. Still, this time Winning Our Future gets closer to the mark. The case concerning Damon Clinical Laboratories is relevant because 1) Romney was a director of the firm while the fraud took place; 2) the fraud appears to have ended only after Bain sold its stake in the firm; 3) Romney personally earned nearly $500,000 from the sale of Damon; and 4) Romney’s statements about what he knew and when he knew it have been inconsistent. We’re going to hear a lot more about Damon if Romney becomes the GOP presidential nominee. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union is already running an ad in Florida that highlights the case. (The spot is at the end of the column.)Let’s take a closer look:The FactsIn 1996, the Justice Department announced that Damon had agreed to pay a $35.3 million criminal fine — one of the largest corporate fines in U.S. history — and an additional $83.7 million to settle whistle-blower lawsuits. The company, then owned by Corning, admitted that from 1988 to 1993 it had bolstered its earnings by submitting false claims to Medicare and other federal programs. Essentially, the firm billed for blood tests that doctors had not ordered. “This is a case, pure and simple, of corporate greed run amok,” U.S. Attorney Donald Stern said at the time. “The settlement represents about $3 for every $1 Damon stole from the taxpayers.”When the case broke, it was clear that Corning ended the scheme after it had acquired Damon from Bain Capital in 1993, according to company and prosecutors’ statements. In the first article on the case — in the Boston Globe on Oct. 10, 1993 — Romney was quoted as saying that he was unaware of any investigation. He claimed that the chief executive of the firm had told the board in about 1992 “that all current practices at the company were now in conformity with government regulations and that in the past there may have been practices which would not be deemed appropriate.”When the Globe revisited the case during Romney’s run for governor in 1992, his story was different. The Globe, disclosing that Romney had earned $473,000 from the sale, reported on Oct. 10, 2002:“Romney said yesterday he was a proactive board member who helped to uncover the fraud. He said he and other board members became aware of the problem after another laboratory, in December 1992, was found to have committed fraud through use of a billing system similar to Damon’s. Romney said the board used its New York law firm to investigate, and as a result, the board took ‘corrective action’ months before Damon was sold to Corning.”But Romney’s claim was not backed up by the facts, the Globe said: “Court records — including statements from prosecutors and Damon’s own admissions — tell a different story, and reveal that the fraudulent activity occurred right up until the time Bain and other owners sold the company to Corning. Prosecutors also give sole credit to Corning for cleaning up the fraud after it purchased the company from Bain and other owners.”Romney later acknowledged that the board did not report to federal investigators any findings from the alleged internal inquiry. Still, Romney was never charged with any wrongdoing. The fraud apparently began in 1988, one year before Bain Capital invested in the company. In the end, four Damon officials were charged with Medicare fraud, including President Joseph Isola, who pleaded no contest to fraud charges and was placed on three years’ probation. The “Blood Money” video takes these facts, reasonably damning by themselves, and then hypes them further. Most troubling,SKAGEN, with words and images, it makes it appear as though Romney was running the company himself: “Romney would manage the company and serve on its board of directors. . . . Under Romney’s direction, the company was making huge profits. . . . Under Romney, the numb |
