Velociraptor,?????ice watch?! the band?s fourth album is their career best ?I always thought Velociraptor would be a cool name for a band and the name stuck And we?re probably going to win a lot of kids over aren?t we? he laughs SFTW were with Tom and guitarist Serge Pizzorno as Kasabian got ready for a one-off show at The Roundhouse in London A radio team are buzzing around grabbing soundbites from the Leicester lads while a burly bouncer watches their every move Tom says he?s feeling a bit jittery with some pre-gig nerves asking for the air conditioner to be switched off to protect his voice while the calmer Serge says he?s looking forward to getting out and playing the new tunes He says: ?I guess this is the point where we almost say goodbye Goodbye to what we were before and welcome the band we have become?Velociraptor?s pyschedelic guitars and futuristic dance grooves are Kasabian at their very best ?We?re touching on bits of the first albums in parts? says Serge ?It?s like a collection of the best bits of the first three records The Beatles moved on with each record and I think we have too? Their last album 2009?s West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum was the record which silenced the critics who thought of them as just another Oasis But they aren?t beer-swilling lad rockers — they?re an experimental band with bags of attitude and self-belief ?To become big off that album was such an achievement? smiles Serge ?It?s our proudest moment ?You look at the album cover and then the album title itself ? and it?s just not meant to work but it did It gave us a new audience and a new belief ?We?re just not your average pop band ? we?re avant-garde yet we?ve sold nearly a million records on each album in England Now that?s a serious amount of records and not just those who buy records at Tesco?Nodding Tom agrees: ?Yes and that album allowed us to make this There was no sitting around We were buzzing and we cracked on Serge here was on a roll?Tom talks proudly of songwriter Serge his best mate since childhood and the brains behind the band?s music ? a songwriter who has really stepped up on this fourth album Serge explains: ?There?s more emotion on Velociraptor There?s some heartbreakers on there and some reflective tunes and of course there?s the good old Kasabian bangers?Days Are Forgotten is a dirgey riff-heavy anthem (?I heard it on the radio the other day and it sounds like nothing else really exciting? says Tom) Let?s Roll Just Like We Used To is a cantering Western film score and the electrifying Re-wired is the album?s killer track As with all their records they started Velociraptor in their hometown of Leicester before heading to San Francisco to work again with producer Dan ?The Automator? Nakamura Hippy Serge says: ?Everything starts in Leicester and 90 per cent of the recording was done there Family and friends ? they?re better than anything ?I love London but you need an ejector seat It?s probably the best city in the world but sometimes when you?re here you need to pull the cord and get the f*** out And that?s why Leicester will always be there for us ?And people think we go to San Francisco because it?s hippy but we?re literally in the studio then the bar and then studio Just hard work?Success fame and awards have not changed Serge and Tom who with bassist Chris Edwards and drummer Ian Matthews make up the band ?We?re still the same lads we always were? says Serge ?We just sort of stick together and get on with it Everyone else goes insane but we are just the same we talk the same and we?re still on the same vibe?Tom says the band have achieved everything they dreamed of doing when they started off ?We?ve had some massive moments and some beautiful times A few years ago we had excess after excess and it?s incredible we survived but we?re much calmer now We were a battering ram who rode through it to where we are here today?One song La Fée Verte (the French nickname given to the drink absinthe) is about their crazier days with friends Laughs Tom: ?It?s a song about not dealing with the real world and getting out of your mind You know going out for milk and not returning for three days Seeing girls with dogs in handbags and watching X Factor on the telly round at someone?s house ?We still have those days ? just less frequently?Serge adds: ?We just enjoy the march and carry on with it We don?t really think about what happens next It?s like Forrest Gump ? we just keep on running and running?Life might be calmer with three of the band being fathers Serge?s son Ennio named after legendary Italian film composer Ennio Morricone recently turned one Serge says: ?I guess having a baby has made me a bit more balanced The madness has disappeared My home life is different "I?ve just got an incredible woman ? she?s amazing and so life is good But playing and going on tour is just the same ? it?s like an old |
